Israel -Scarlet South Festival - in the Western Negev

The Western Negev has been in the news almost daily, as it has been the focus of constant Qassam missile attacks from bordering Gaza. Local regional councils and other organizations, including KKL-JNF decided that it was time for people to experience other facets of this fascinating region. The month of February, which in Israel is already the end of winter, provided a perfect opportunity to visit the south. The name chosen for this month-long festival is the catchy Darom Adom – Scarlet South – since red anemones are in flower everywhere, covering the western Negevs expanses in breathtaking scarlet carpets. Other attractions include open-air markets selling local produce such as cheeses and boutique wines, cycling and various activities for all age groups. Hikes through the unique natural landscape of this region were organized by KKL-JNF. We joined such a hike, enjoying the perfect weather and feasting our eyes on the seemingly never-ending wildflowers and natural vistas. Photos by Rafael Ben-Ari/Chameleons Eye
