Passage to MarseilleMonday, December 28, 2009 Photo Exhibition about Marseille France Sea Port All photos taken in May 2008 Photographed and Written by Rafael Ben-Ari Synopsis: Marseille- Marselha or Marsiho is also formerly known as Massalia is the second most populous French city as well as the oldest city in France. Located on the south east coast of France on the Mediterranean Sea, Marseille is Frances largest commercial port and the sea gate to Europe from Africa. Marseille is the administrative capital of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, as well as the administrative capital of the Bouches-du-Rhône department. Its inhabitants are called Marseillais. Because of its pre-eminence as a Mediterranean port, Marseille has always been one of the main gateway into France. This has attracted many immigrants and made Marseille a cosmopolitan melting pot. By the end of the eighteenth century about half the population originated from elsewhere. All photos take by Rafael Ben-Ari/Chameleons Eye Browse the gallery: Passage to Marseille |
