Israel-Sderot Conference on Social Issues. The Conference was conceived in April 2003 as a joint venture between Sapir College and the Council for Social and Economic Security headed by Maj. Gen. (res.) Uzi Dayan. The location and name of the conference were chosen to convey a clear message: The current public discourse in Israel centered around two main focal points, the Herzliya Conference and the Caesarea Conference – which together represented the political/security/economic approach, completely neglecting the third main focal one: socio-economic issues. These issues are at the heart of the Sderot Conference that has emerged as the third main annual public conference in Israel. Photos by Rafael Ben-Ari/Chameleons Eye
