Israeli Children Back to School

Children are returning to school in Sderot, Israel to start the year overlooked by the Army with signs welcoming them on Monday September 1, 2008. Roughly 1.5 million Israeli children went back to school on Monday, as the start of the academic year went ahead with few disruptions. On the eve of back to school day, it emerged that a lack of security guards will leave the gates of one-third of Israeli schools unprotected. The difficulty in procuring security stems from low wages schools pay guards, who can easily receive more money at other establishments. Photo by Rafael Ben-Ari/Chameleons Eye.

Injured Fatah men are fleeing into Israel with the help of Israel\'s Defense Force and emergency services after bloody clashes in the Gaza Strip on Saturday August 2, 2008 in Nachal Oz, Israel. Over 150 loyalists of the Fatah-linked Hilles clan fled the Gaza Strip on Saturday and entered Israel, after bloody day-long battle of clashes with the ruling Hamas operatives in the Gaza Strip, had left at least four people dead and more than 80 wounded. In a humanitarian move, the Hilles clan members were allowed through the Erez and Nahal Oz border crossings between Gaza and Israel, some of them wounded, and some carrying guns, while Hamas gunmen followed and fired at them and shot mortar shells in their direction. Second Bulldozer Terror Rampage in Jerusalem

Sixteen people were wounded, one of them moderately, as a bulldozer driver went on a rampage in central Jerusalem on Tuesday July 22, 2008 in an apparent attempt to recreate the terror attack in the capital earlier this month. The vehicle left a construction site near Yemin Moshe neighborhood and set off towards Liberty Bell Park. It drove a distance of approximately 160 meters, attempting to overturn a bus and crashing into four other vehicles - one of which it flipped over. The man was then shot dead by a civilian and a border policeman. The wounded were evacuated to hospitals in the capital. The attack took place in a busy part of downtown Jerusalem, several hundred meters from the luxury hotel where US presidential candidate Barack Obama is supposed to stay Tuesday night as he kicks off a visit to Israel. The bus that was hit, No. 13, was of the same line of the one that was overturned in the previous attack. Photo by Zaka/Chameleons Eye.

Water Shortage in Israel

Watering grass with valuable drinking water in Israel on Friday July 11, 2008. Israel is suffering its greatest drought in the past decade and will have to stop pumping from one of its main drinking water sources by the end of the summer. Israel has to stop pumping from the Sea of Galilee Ñ the source of about 40 percent of its drinking water Ñ it will have to step up extraction from already-depleted aquifers, underground water-bearing seams of rock. Israel\'s water problem stems from population growth and an improvement in quality of life that brings a greater desire to water lawns and gardens. This winter was the fourth that Israel received less than average rainfall, with only about 50-60 percent of the average in most areas. Photo by Rafael Ben-Ari/Chameleons Eye.
