The Israel-Sderot Conference on Social Issues2008

Protesting against the new Israeli economy plan at the Israel-Sderot Conference on Social Issues. The Conference was conceived in April 2003 as a joint venture between Sapir College and the Council for Social and Economic Security headed by Maj. Gen. (res.) Uzi Dayan. The location and name of the conference were chosen to convey a clear message: The current public discourse in Israel centered around two main focal points, the Herzliya Conference and the Caesarea Conference – which together represented the political/security/economic approach, completely neglecting the third main focal one: socio-economic issues. These issues are at the heart of the Sderot Conference that has emerged as the third main annual public conference in Israel.

Dozens of police were sent to secure the relocation of a single caravilla located at Gaza evacuees\' temporary housing site, after previous attempt met resistance. Nitzan residents were angered as three years have passed and many of the evacuees still reside in Nitzan, as no permanent housing solution has been found for them. The trailer was supposed to be moved last week, but police forces sent to secure the move met unexpected resistance in the form of a 54-year-old woman who entrenched herself in the empty trailer with her son, in protest of their dire financial situation. During the standoff with police forces, the woman unleashed gas into the space, rendering herself and her son unconscious. Emergency medical personal, with the assistance of the police were able to rescue and revive both. Several days ago, someone tried to set the same caravilla on fire. 35 Kassam Rockets Hit Israel After IDF Kills Si...

Israel Defense Forces are withdrawing from Gaza Strip on Wednesday November 5, 2008. A barrage of rockets fired by Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip, hit southern Israel on Wednesday morning after IDF forces engaged Hamas gunmen inside the Strip and killed six. It was the worst outbreak of violence since a shaky cease-fire took effect in June. Hamas claimed responsibility for the rockets, which caused no reported injuries or damages. Two of the rockets exploded in the northern Negev city of Ashkelon, one struck a kibbutz in the western Negev and six others were located in open fields. Three Israeli soldiers were wounded and six gunmen were reported killed in the clashes, which began when IDF special forces entered Gaza in order to blow up a tunnel dug by Hamas terrorists for the purpose of kidnapping IDF soldiers. A soldier was lightly wounded in the ensuing firefight with Hamas gunmen, the IDF said, adding that there were also casualties among the gunmen. Since the cease-fire went into effect in June, Hamas has dug an unknown number of tunnels to facilitate future attacks on Israel and to smuggle large quantities of weapons from Sinai. The tunnels are seen as central to Hamas's terrorist infrastructure in the Strip. Photo by Rafael Ben-Ari/Chameleons Eye.
