Kaparot in Israel for Yom Kippur
Israelis practice Kaparot in the streets of Ashkelon, Israel on Sunday October 5, 2008. Kaparot is an ancient and mystical custom connected to the Jewish Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur. It can be performed anytime between Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur, but most often it is performed just after dawn on the day before Yom Kippur. The original form of the kaparot ceremony involves taking a chicken (a white rooster for a male, hen for a female) and waving it over one’s head while reciting this prayer: \

Israel\'s Government Passes Clean Air Act
Israel\'s Environmental committee are inspecting Ashkelon\'s power station on Sunday October 5, 2008. After three years in the making, Israel\'s government finally passed Israel\'s Clean Air Act on Tuesday, with 39 MKs voting in favor of it and none objecting. The act is expected to regulate all issues pertaining to the air quality in Israel, enabling local authorities to crackdown on industries or individuals that contribute to excessive air pollution. The bill is said to take effect at the beginning of 2011. The environmental committee visited the Ashkelon power station on Sunday to inspect and learn more about the achievments that Israel\'s electric company are carrying out to decrease pollution from the power station. A Palestinian woman from Gaza Strip who gave birth to four premature babies in Israel returned to Gaza Strip on Wednesday September 3 2008. The Palestinian woman named Helwah (Means: Pretty in Arabic) arrived to the medical center in Israel three months ago in purpose to receive a special medical treatment to delay an early labor of the four babies. As time passed, her charming personality created a close relationship between her and the Israel medical team and as her husband could not get out from Gaza strip because of the security problem on the border she found comfort, love and care from the Israelis. A few days before she gave birth the team found toxic had been developing and the head of obstetrics and gynecology department Prof. Eyal Antebi decided to operate Helwah immediately and had to take out the four babies urgently. Rocket Fired from Gaza Strikes Sderot
A Kassam rocket fired from the Gaza Strip struck the southern Israeli town of Sderot on Monday, August 11 2008 causing no damage or injuries, police sources said. The incident continues a pattern of sporadic cross-border shelling and rocket launches breaking the cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas. Israel Transfers Fatah Refugees to West Bank
Fatah refugees in Israel are being transferred to Jericho in Erez crossing on Monday August 4, 2008. The Defense Ministry and the Palestinian Authority decided late Monday morning to transfer to Jericho the Fatah refugees who were still in Israel after fleeing Saturday\'s fierce fighting with Hamas in Gaza. The activists include members of the Hilles clan, some of the 188 Palestinian who escaped into Israel following a series of clashes with Hamas which left 11 people dead. The refugees will be granted temporary asylum in the West Bank city of Jericho, despite initial plans to transfer them to Ramallah. Israel originally admitted the men following a request from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, on the understanding that they would be sent on to the West Bank. 150 Fatah Men Enter Israel After fleeing Gaza V...
Injured Fatah men are fleeing into Israel with the help of Israel\'s Defense Force and emergency services after bloody clashes in the Gaza Strip on Saturday August 2, 2008 in Nachal Oz, Israel. Over 150 loyalists of the Fatah-linked Hilles clan fled the Gaza Strip on Saturday and entered Israel, after bloody day-long battle of clashes with the ruling Hamas operatives in the Gaza Strip, had left at least four people dead and more than 80 wounded. In a humanitarian move, the Hilles clan members were allowed through the Erez and Nahal Oz border crossings between Gaza and Israel, some of them wounded, and some carrying guns, while Hamas gunmen followed and fired at them and shot mortar shells in their direction. Twelve of the wounded were children, hospital officials said, and eight people were in critical condition. Loud explosions and gunfire could be heard throughout the day across Gaza City. Three Years Since the Disengagement
Evacuated families at the temporary housing project for Gaza Strip evacuees are living with an uncertain future on Wednesday July 30, 2008 in Nitzan Settlement, Israel. Three years after the disengagement from Gaza, a survey shows 81% of the evacuees are still living in temporary housing and 50% are still unemployed. Israel Prime Minister Will Step Down from Office
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert held a special press conference on Wednesday at 8 p.m. where he announced he will not run in the Kadima primary scheduled to take place in September. Olmert said he would resign from office upon selection of a successor, and would allow his successor to attempt to form a coalition. The prime minister has been under official criminal investigation in recent months over allegations of corruption in his former capacities as Jerusalem mayor and trade minister. Second Bulldozer Terror Rampage in Jerusalem
Sixteen people were wounded, one of them moderately, as a bulldozer driver went on a rampage in central Jerusalem on Tuesday July 22, 2008 in an apparent attempt to recreate the terror attack in the capital earlier this month. The vehicle left a construction site near Yemin Moshe neighborhood and set off towards Liberty Bell Park. It drove a distance of approximately 160 meters, attempting to overturn a bus and crashing into four other vehicles - one of which it flipped over. The man was then shot dead by a civilian and a border policeman. The wounded were evacuated to hospitals in the capital. The attack took place in a busy part of downtown Jerusalem, several hundred meters from the luxury hotel where US presidential candidate Barack Obama is supposed to stay Tuesday night as he kicks off a visit to Israel. Israel\'s water problem stems from population growth and an improvement in quality of life that brings a greater desire to water lawns and gardens.
