The taxicabs of New York City, with their distinctive yellow paint, are a widely recognized icon of the city. There are more than 13,000 taxis operating in the city, not including over 40,000 other for-hire vehicles.Taxicabs are operated by private companies and licensed by the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC), a New York City government agency. Only medallion taxis, those painted in distinctive yellow paint and regulated by the TLC, are permitted to pick up passengers in response to a street hail. The TLC also regulates and licenses for-hire vehicles, known as car services or livery cabs, which are prohibited from picking up street hails (although this is less often enforced in outer boroughs) and are supposed to pick up only those customers who have called the car service's dispatcher and requested a car. Medallion taxis are named for the official medallion issued by the TLC and attached to a taxis hood. The medallion may be purchased from the City at infrequent auctions, or from another medallion owner. Because of their high prices, medallions (and most cabs) are owned by investment companies and are leased to drivers (hacks). An auction was held in 2006, where 308 new medallions were sold. In the 2006 auction all medallions were designated as either hybrids (254) or handicap accessible (54) taxis.Yellow cabs are often concentrated in the borough of Manhattan, but patrol throughout the five boroughs of New York City and may be hailed with a raised hand or by standing at a taxi stand. A cab's availability is indicated by the lights on the top of the car. When just the center light showing the medallion number is lit, the cab is empty and available. When the OFF DUTY inscriptions to either side of the medallion number are lit, the cab is off duty and not accepting passengers. As of June 2006, fares begin at $2.50 ($3.00 after 8:00 p.m., and $3.50 during the peak weekday hours of 4:00???8:00 p.m.) and increase based on the distance traveled and time spent in slow

Mofaz, who now views himself as a future prime minister, said on Sunday that the Israeli government should be prepared to negotiate directly with Hamas in the event that they gain electoral victory following Palestinian President Mahmoud Abass predicted retirement from politics. Mr Mofaz was laying out his own proposal for a peace plan since so far none has been forthcoming from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Mr Mofaz said that under his plan a Palestinian state would be established within one year, initially on 60 per cent of the West Bank. As many as 65,000 Jewish settlers now living in isolated settlements would need to be relocated while the larger settlement blocs would be annexed in exchange for Israeli territory. A final Palestinian state, Mr Mofaz said, would be on at least 92 per cent of the West Bank and Gaza. Photo by Rafael Ben-Ari/Chameleons Eye.

AnIsraeli Jewish family in Israel Moshav Kochav Michael in the Western Negev, South Israel are celebrating the Jewish holiday of Sukkoth, on the eve of the holiday on Friday, October 2, 2009. The holiday is celebrated in memory of the Exodus from Egypt, and lasts for 7 days. It takes place from 15. Tishri, normally found in October. The reason for living in huts, is that this resembles the way the Jews were living during the 40 years of wandering in Sinai. The practice during this feast varies, but the most pious still live in huts during the festival, and even more Jews eat their meals here, while they sleep in their houses. These huts are erected in the five days between Yom Kippur and Sukkoth. Four species of plants are celebrated with Sukkoth, etrog (citron), lulav (date palm), myrtle, and willow. These are brought to the synagogue, and waved about during the ceremonies. On the last day of Sukkoth, the yearly cycle of reading the Torah starts in festive surroundings. Israeli supporters of kidnapped Soldier Gilad Shalit, wait and protest outside Erez crossing, between Gaza and Israel, for the passing of the nineteen Palestinian prisoners in exchange for a two-minute long video which proves kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Schalit is alive and in good condition on Friday, October 2, 2009. The supporters called to the Palestinians to release Shalit from captivity. Meanwhile, by midday Friday, Israel almost completed its share of the deal, releasing 19 prisoners, 18 to the West Bank and one to Gaza. The 20th prisoner will be released Sunday, after it turned out that a prisoner released Wednesday was in any case about to complete her sentence and would therefore be released regardless of the deal. Earlier Friday, the prisoners were transferred in four Israel Prison Service vehicles from Hasharon Prison to Ofer Prison and Hashikma Prison, where they were examined by officials from the International Committee of the Red Cross to ascertain that they were in good health. The deal Friday was the first release of Palestinian prisoners under the Netanyahu government. Photo by Rafael Ben-Ari/Chameleons Eye.
